At one time I was a buyer for a huge retail organization doing in excess of $500,000,000 in sales a year. I sat on various merchandising committees. I was a professional buyer for nearly every category of product, negotiating prices and deals with presidents and CEOs of the largest US manufacturers and the biggest importers - especially from Japan. I know how the merchandise gets priced!

So, how cheap are the prices at the so-called "discounters" like Wal-Mart, BJ's Wholesale, Costco, and Sam's Club? Let's just say, the public has been brainwashed!

The biggest lie you hear about these companies (and others like them) is that they work on thin margins. This is what they want you to think! And you fall for it!

Yes, I was part of the so-called biggest discount industry and we tried very hard to train the public about gigantic savings. We had a huge import department - I was in charge of that. How many items are imported today? Just about everything!

Here's the real shock for you ... we had to maintain an average profit margin of at least 40%. So, when they say the discounters work on "thin margins," don't believe it! They may use "loss leaders" in various departments to fool you into thinking they are the cheapest on every product.

Prior to working as the Import Director for this retail group, I had my own retail business. I sold "key items" very near cost.

That's how they confuse the public! People can't remember the prices of 10,000 items, but they DO remember the prices of a few key items. Every retail business does this. So you really understand how this works, I'm going to use the following example ...

Right now a gallon of milk is what we, in the industry, call a "football" item. As of this writing, Wal-Mart is priced at $2.89. The supermarkets try very hard to be at $3.19. And, of course, the drug chains are at $2.79. They are playing "mind games" with you. Here's what happens. People begin to believe that because the store is cheaper on milk, they are cheaper on everything they sell. That's how it works.

Let's say we open a retail store selling food items. The best promotion would be to offer 1 gallon of milk for $1.99. That would be the BEST grand opening promotion to get people into our store. After all, if milk is priced so cheap, we must be cheaper on everything else we sell as well.

The overall picture is very simple. None of the so-called "discounters" can afford to work on a gross profit under 40%. To make it easier for you to understand, I'll illustrate it this way ...

If you pay $10 for a item, they most likely paid $6 (or less) which gives them a $4 profit. If they bring the item in on a direct import basis, they pay $1, sell it for $10, and keep $9. They are laughing all the way to the bank. Yes, they fooled you.

Unbelievable? Of course it is. But, you have to understand the facts of life. They need this money to ...

• Buy or lease 100,000 square feet of retail and/or warehouse space.
• Pay utilities like water, power, gas, telephones, maintenance.
• Pay employee salaries and benefits such as health insurance and pensions.
• Pay for legal services. All big companies get sued, so they must pay costs of lawsuits.
• Pay for problems with unions and strikes. These can cost plenty of money.
• Pay for business insurance.
• Absorb employee theft which is a very expensive part of any business.
• Pay for cost of freight to bring goods to the stores.
• Pay for advertising - for example, printing flyers and running ads on TV.

As you can see, they cannot afford to sell anything too cheaply. They need to make a profit - and lots of it!

   Remember, your order will automatically be sent to our suppliers who will process your order and ship it directly to you. You'll pay the actual shipping charges - not ONE PENNY more!

2. Handling Charges. The suppliers have some handling charges. Some suppliers use a percentage of the total order and others charge a fee based on the amount of the order (excluding shipping costs).

   This is the same situation as the shipping charges. You pay whatever handling fee the supplier has. Whatever we pay, you pay. Again, not ONE PENNY more!

   Your best bet is to get all of the wholesale catalogs and price lists so you'll know the exact charges, why, and how much. Educate yourself and be an informed customer!

3. Payment Charges. When you pay by credit card, our payment processor charges us a percentage of each total sale. Because we are selling all of the merchandise at just 1¢ over wholesale cost, we have to pass this charge on to you. Whatever we pay, you pay.

   Our payment processor and bank charges us 3.52% for credit card transactions - and that is exactly what we will charge you. The percentage is calculated on the total amount of your total order - including shipping and handling. Our automated order processing system will calculate all charges automatically.

   Something important for you to understand. We are in the business of selling memberships. We don't make any profit - except the one penny - from any merchandise you buy. As we add more vendors, importers, and manufacturers, we don't intend to make money from their products, either.

   We calculated all charges, bank fees, and merchant fees to the penny! You pay exactly what it costs us to do business with the credit card companies. Yes, we all make the banks richer, but there is nothing we can do about that right now.

   The credit card charges do NOT apply to your annual membership enrollment fee. For your membership enrollment, we also accept your personal check or money order. Enrollments are handled by our Customer Service and merchandise orders are handled by the computer directly to the supplier - the process is fully automated. The entire order process is done through our secure shopping cart and payment processing center.

4. Alaska, Hawaii, and International Club Members. Those members located in Alaska, Hawaii, and outside the U.S. have certain disadvantages. Each supplier is different and has different shipping policies. Some only ship within the continental U.S., while others will ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. As we add more suppliers, this may change.

Not all of the merchandise will be up on the web site. With all the changes that are made by the suppliers, it's impossible to have 100% of all products online. There is a secure order form where you can place orders online for catalog items not available online. You will have to type in the product number, name, weight and wholesale price + ONE PENNY. The same high technology encryption used for the shopping cart is used for the general order form as well.

Regarding Product Availability ... Out- of-stock items, backorders, defectives and returns are handled by our Customer Service Department.

Our suppliers try very hard to keep their inventory up to date. It's logical that they are NEVER out of their BEST SELLING items. Items that are out-of-stock are usually those they plan to discontinue for many reasons ... they didn't sell well, poor quality, too many defectives, or the supplier never shipped. All that can happen - and more.

Another fact is that imported items and catalogs change from year to year. Poor selling items are replaced with new items, hot trendy items are added, and new categories are tested. The same thing happens in stores like Wal-Mart ... items change, prices change, and vendors change. It's an ongoing process. And, yes, a buyer can miss a hot item ... they didn't buy enough.
